The efforts of the placement oftpe Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial lost
a true hero on August 31st, 2003. Dave Balfour succumbed to his battle with
cancer just days before the official arrival'ofthe granite stones that bear the
names of the 280 law officers of Massachusetts who have been killed in the line
of duty. In fact it was only when he was told that the stones were in
Massachusetts that Dave gave up a valiant fight.
It was somewhat ironic that
Dave's funeral took place on the very day ofthe official welcoming ceremony at
the State House, a ceremony that he had planned from start to finish. And the
event was made even more special by several of Dave's kids who took time away
from their grief to witness first hand the results of his labors.
Dave was a believer of all things law enforcement officers hold dear. Certainly
his record of performance on behalf of the memorial bears that out. However,
his dedication goes back quite a way. He was a mover & shaker for the Law
Enforcement Torch Run in the 80's and who could forget his sheparding talents
during the Sail Boston in 1992?
Dave was clearly a doer. Not one to accept mediocrity he lived by his own
philosophy -
"Make it Happen"
The foundation - indeed the entire law enforcement community owes a debt to
Dave that can perhaps never fully repaid. But if we keep on and maintain the
memories of those who went before us; it will be a good start.
His energy will
be impossible to replicate and his very presence will be missed
forever.
Rest in Peace, Dave, the Memorial will serve as a living testament to your
efforts.
